Дорогі радіо слухачі!

Сьогодні тзв. неділя Святих Оців. Згадуємо тих владик, які зібралися у Нікеї 325 року, щоб розглянути справу Арія і його навчання. Вони уложили символ віри, який був доповнений у Царгороді 381 р. і тому називаний Никийсько-Царгородським символом. Там про нашого Господа так сказано, що ми віруємо в Ісуса Христа, Сина Божого, єдинородного, від Отиця народженого перед усіма віками. Світло від світла, Бога істинного від Бога істинного, родженого не сотвореного, єдиносущного з Отцем, через якого все сталося. Він задля нас людей і нашого ради спасіння зійшов із небес і воплотився з Духа Святого і Марії Діви, і став чоловіком. І був розпятий за нас за Понтія Пилата, і страждав і Був похований. І воскрес у третій день, згідно з писанням, і вознісся на небо і сидить правореуч Отця. І вдруге прийде зі славою судити живих і мертвих, а його царству не буде кінця.

Євангеліє сьогодні від Івана - це Христова архиєрейська Молитва.

Правдоподібно в кімнаті де відбулася тайна вечера, або по дорозі до гестсеманського городу Він підносячи свої очі до неба так промовляє: “Отче, прийшла година. Прослав свого сина, щоб син твій тебе прославив.” Господь находиться при кінці свого земського життя. Перед ним страсті, розпяття але і воскресіння. Він не старєтсья розв’язувати труднощі, що перед ним. Не шукає помочі від інших, ані навіть не роздумує, як самому втекти від ворогів. Він має повне довір’я до свого Небесного Батька. Він щоправда буде до нього звертатися словами: “Отче, якщо можливо відійми цю чашу від мене”, але змістя додасть, “та нехай не буде моя, але твоя воля.” Ціле своє життя тут на землі Він старався сповняти волю Божу і від нас того самого вимагає.

Важним є, щоб Всевишній був нами прославлюваний. Таке наставлення нераз повязане з великими терпіннями, але приносить благословенні овочі. Коли стараємося себе прославляти, жити самолюбно, ми скоро зрозуміємо, що не йде все так, як би ми хотіли. Інші не поводяться з нами так як ми думаємо, що ми заслужили, і ми тоді чуємося упосліджені, всіма залишині. Нам тяжко. Терпіння стає тягарем, якого стараємося позбутися. Коли зможемо сказати: “Отче наш,  не важне чи мої бажання сповнятсья, не важне чи мої пляни виконаються, не важне чи я страждаю,але важним є, щоб Ти, через мої немочі був прославлений, бо наш Господь сказав Павлові: “Моя сила накраще виявляється у твоїй безсилі.

У чому полягає Христова слава. Чи в насмішках, чи в терпінні на хресті, чи в його смерті, чи у воскресінні. Що доброго можемо знайти у нещасті, що приходить. “Пер аспера ад астра”, тобто через терпіння до звізд, казали старі римляни, і це було мото благопокійного патріярха Йосифа Сліпого. Неє учень більшй від свого учителя, нагадує нам Христос. З нього сміялися і з нас будуть, Його розіпяли, і нас не пощадять. І нас обвинуватять, і нас засудять так як Христа. Але коли беремо участь у його терпінні то таксамо буде і у воскресінні. У всьому, що ми робимо, чи плянуємо робити Христова допомога для нас конче потрібна. Без Господа ми нічого не можемо бдіяти. Від нього ми залежні, і з ним ми справді сильні.

Христос молится за своїх учнів. Він так каже: “Я обявив твоє ім’я людям, яких ти дав мені зо світу. Вони були твої, і ти дав їх мені, і вони зберегли твоє слово. Тепер вони зрозуміли, що все, що ти дав мені, від тебе походить; слова бо, що ти дав мені, я дав їм і вони прийняли й таки справді зрозуміли, що я від Тебе вийшов, і увірували, що Ти мене послав.... Отче св’ятий, ради імени твого бережи їх, яких ти дав мені, і ніхто з них не пропав...”

Ми жевемо в непевному світі. Христос є та певність, що ідучи за ним ме не спотикнемося, а коли навіть і впали би, він піднесе нас, поставить на ноги і вкаже дорогу, якою нам пр’ямувати.

Одного разу зірвалася сильна буря на морі. Хвилі піднімалися високо вгору і кидали кораблем. Всі люди дуже злякалися, дехто молився, і напевно пригадував себі подібну ситуацію, коли то Христос утихомирював бурю на морі, а тут Христа нема і вони пропадають. На кораблі був також десятилітний хлопиць, який безжурно приглядався до морських хвиль. Його запиталися: “Ти, хлопче, хіба не боїшся? Чи не бачиш, що корабель може перевернутися і ми усі пропадемо.”

“А пощо мені боятися”, спокійно відповів хлопець. Мій батько є капітаном цього корабля, і я переконаний, що він щасливо запровадить нас до пристані.”

Господь є капітаном нашого корабля, і нема нам чого боятися. Він доведе нас до пристані, де немає болізні ні печалі ні зідхання, але життя безконечне.

Через нього ми знаємо хто ми є, що ми є дітьми Божими, що ми є його братами і сестрами, і що наше місце у Його домі.

Одна старша пані, яка мала недугу алцхаймера так молилася: ”Господи, я не знаю де я є, Я не знаю, хто я є, я не знаю, що зле є зі мною, але, Ти, який все знайеш, допоможи мені.” Такою хай буде і наша молитва, то зможемо іти дорогою пр’ямою, не дивлячися ані на ліво ані на право, не звважуючи бурю яка шаліє надовкола нас. Ми повинні бути так перекононі у божу силу і його доброту і його милосердя, що в найгірших хвилинах ми не заломаємося, але будемо до нього простягати руки на молитву, і він нашу молитву прийми і потішить нас і визволить нас.

Господь молится сьогодні і за нас коли каже: “Та не лише за цих молю, які через їх слово увірують у мене, щоб усі були одно, як ти отче в мені, і я в тобі, щоб і вони були в нас одно, щоб світ увірував, що ти мене послав... Я їм об’явив Твоє ім’я і буду об’являти, щоб любов, якою Ти возлюбив мене, в них була, і я в них.

Мова тут про єдність, мова про любов. Одне і други ми немов забули.Усі прославляємо Христа, а в той сам час ворогуємо проти себе. Нема єдности і нема любови. Коли нарешті прийди час, щоб усвідомити собі, що Христос оснував одну церкву, що всі мають горнутися коло Нього і разом прославляти свого Отця Небесного, люблячися таким спосом, яким Господь нас навчив. Чи нарешті православні і католики і протистанти і всі що призивають ім’я Господнє, зможуть називати хрестиянами і при пристолі ламати хліб та споживати його і пити з однієї чаші?

Молімся часто за цю єдність. Людина поділила, але Дух Св’ятий може наново зєднати, якщо провідники різних віроісповідань дадутся вести Святим Духом. Не важне хто коли провинився, хто відділився, важним є дивитися, що нас єднає, що ми ще не затратили, що можемо привирнути. Коли любов пануватими в нас, коли зуміємо простити і просити прощення, то безперечно що запанує ота довгоожидана єдність і в нашій церкві, і ми всі будемо справжніми дітьми Божими, які любитимуться між собою і знатимуть хто їхній небесніий батько.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

The Sunday which follows the Ascension is called the “Sunday of the Holy Fathers”.  Today we commemorate the bishops who sat at the Council of Nicea, the first in date of the seven ecumenical councils.  But today, I would like to draw our attention back to the Feast of Ascension which we celebrated this past Thursday.  When Jesus, having fulfilled his earthly mission, took leave of His mother and Disciples, and Ascended to His Father in Heaven, it was His final act on earth, but it was an act that opens to us, His followers, endless possibilities, for Jesus did not return to his Father alone.  Through the mystery of the Incarnation, Jesus assumed all of humanity unto Himself, and now each of us is a part of Christ as He lives in us.  And when the doors of the Kingdom of Heaven opened wide to receive our triumphant Lord, the whole of redeemed humanity was also received and accepted by the Father.  The Feast of Ascension celebrates not only Jesus' glorification by the Father, but also the Father's acceptance of each one of us, regardless of our sins and imperfections.  In today’s Gospel reading, St. John writes about how our Lord speaks to His Father, He speaks as His Son, whom the Father has sent, saying that He came out from the Father and that all things that are the Father's are also the Son's.  These Gospel words prove the divinity of Christ; that He is our Lord and through His Body, the Church, He opens to us the path of deliverance and Eternal life.

The Feast of our Lord’s Ascension always falls on the Thursday of the fortieth day after Christ’s resurrection.  St. John Chrysostom in his homily on the Ascension wrote: “Today the human race is completely reconciled with God.  The ancient battle and enmity have disappeared.  We, who were unworthy to live on earth, are now lifted up to Heaven.  Today, we become heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven and inherit the throne of the King and Lord.  Human nature, against which the cherubim guarded paradise, is now raised up above all the cherubim.”  In the fourth century, the feast of our Lord’s Ascension became a universal feast and was highly extolled in sermons not only by St. John Chrysostom, but also St. Gregory of Nyssa, St. Epiphany of Cyprus, Leo the Great, and many others.  The spirit of the services of this feast, as a whole, is uplifting and joyful.  The Church rejoices at the glory of Christ, who is now seated at the right hand of the Father.  He Ascended into Heaven, in order to send us ‘the Comforter’ – the Holy Spirit – and to “prepare a place for us in Heaven” (John 14:2), as He promised.  Jesus does not return to His Father alone, for He brought into it the human nature which He had assumed; thus opening the doors of the Kingdom of Heaven to all of humanity.

Holy Scripture writes: “God has raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”  As if by proxy, we take possession of the benefits which are offered and made possible to us.  The Church reminds us in this celebration that there are places destined for each of us in the Kingdom of God, if we are faithful - if we believe in and follow the Word of God, and that our presence is not only desired, but the Lord is waiting for us.  This is meant to bring us great joy, because the Ascension makes thoughts of Heaven more immediate and more actual to us.  But do we think of Eternity often enough?  For most Christians, life in heaven is no more then a supplement to life here on earth.  Life in heaven is seen somewhat as a postscript, an appendix to a book whose text is formed by earthly life.  But this is the opposite of what we know as a Church to be true.  Our earthly life is but the preface to the book.  Life in heaven will be its main text, and this text is endless.  I saw a fabulous bumper sticker the other day that read: Life is good but Eternal life is better!  To make use of another image, our earthly life is but a tunnel - narrow, dark, and very short - which opens onto a magnificent, sunlit landscape more beautiful then we can even imagine.  We think too much about what our life is now, and not enough about what it will become.  Even Holy Scripture writes: “Eyes have not seen, ears have not heard, what God has prepared for those who love Him.” Our lives would indeed be changed and transformed, if from now on, we threw our hearts over the barrier, beyond this world, and into the Kingdom where is found not only our own true good, but also the true good of those whom we love and those in need of our love.

My grandmother, through her fine example, instilled within me the desire to help others at an early age.  She taught me to notice those whom others ignore.  She was very compassionate.  Years ago, some of the railroad tracks here in Buffalo, were within a mile of my grandparents’ home. "Beggars" and "Bums" (as they were called by many) frequently would knock on the doors in their neighborhood during the summer asking for food. They were often turned away or rebuked. Others simply ignored the knocks. My grandmother always went to the door smiling. She would invite them to stay and have something to eat. She would have me open up the card table and carry chairs out onto the covered porch. There was a nice view into the flower gardens, and the breeze was cool even on the hottest days.  She would bring a red and white checkered tablecloth and set the table as carefully as she did for any company.  She would pour their coffee and pile their plate with food and dessert. She even sent a packed meal with them when they were ready to go, so that they had something to eat for later.  Sometimes my grandmother brought the newspaper to those who asked about work, and she made phone calls to help them try and find jobs. She listened to those who wanted to talk. Grandma never asked what led them to be in there predicament. It did not matter.  She only saw their need.  Many of the neighbors thought she should not extend this courtesy.  But Grandma would say, "In the depression when my father was scouring around for any work to feed us, thoughtful people helped him. I am just repaying their kindness. I cannot offer them money, but I can see they do not leave hungry or discouraged."  My grandmother passed away eleven years ago, but when I think about the people that I have looked up to in my life, she always comes to mind. I believe that in the twenty-first century we can make as many advances spiritually as we did technologically in the twentieth century. I know we can accomplish this when we devote ourselves to being loving and caring individuals toward one another – devoted followers in the footsteps of Christ. 

In today's Gospel reading, Jesus' parting words to His disciples are: "And this is Eternal life that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."  Eternal life is about love and relationship.  Relationship with God, relationship with Jesus, relationship with one another lived out in love.  It is experienced when we encounter the Almighty and His unbelievable love first hand.  A priest knows Eternal life at the Lord's Supper, when he looks down into the face of a child waiting to receive the Body and Blood of Christ with wide-eyed awe and anticipation.  As someone once said, ‘Every child comes with the message that God is not yet discouraged with mankind.’ A medical professional knows Eternal life when he or she sits with a person on their death bed or watches a person whose body has failed them, whom the medical world can no longer help, whose life is coming to a quick end, and yet they are at peace; for they have lived in relationship with God, and the step across the threshold from this world into the next holds no fear for them.  A counselor knows Eternal life when he or she is with a group of men and women who trust each other enough to talk about their failures and disappointments in life, and are still able to support and pray for one another. A volunteer at a city mission knows Eternal life when they can help the poor or hungry.  They may even hear the words of Jesus echoing in the back of their minds, "As you did it to one of the least of my brethren, you did it to me."   Every day, men and women are able to see God at work in their lives.  Each and every one of us knows Eternal life when we are using the gifts that God has given us, and we feel as though what they allow us to do is worthwhile, because they permit the work of God, through the Holy Spirit, to flow through us and fill this world with His love.

It is a conscious choice to take the time to nurture our relationship with God.  To allow God to become a part of our lives, to receive the love He intended for us, and to share that love with one another.  We need to take time for prayer and worship and unity with our fellow brothers and sisters.  We also need to nurture the faith of our children, allowing them to be in the presence of God and God's people, so that they too may experience the love of the Lord and allow their relationship to take root.  Every night, when my son and I pray together, we say: ‘Lord, teach us to love you better and to love you as we find you in one another’.  So often, we neglect this love by failing to recognize it.  As a Church, we need to make choices that allow all persons to be touched by God.  We need to allow for those personal encounters with Jesus that can grow into a genuine relationship, giving life new joy, purpose, and meaning.   When Christ Ascended to Heaven, He brought with Him the whole of humanity, and He reconciled us once and for all with the love of the Father.  Mother Theresa put it best when she said, "To show great love for God and our neighbor, we need not do great things.  It is how much love we put into doing that makes our offering something beautiful for God".  We find joy when we share it freely with others.  We find love when we consider those around us before ourselves.  We glorify God when we participate in sharing His love with one another, and what better time to remember Christ’s Love then when He Ascended into Heaven with God the Father.
