Царю Небесний Утішителю Душе істинни, що всюди єси і все наповняєш, скарби дібр і життя податилю, прийди і всилися в нас і очисти нас від усякої скверни і спаси Благий Душі наші! Амінь.

Дорогі радіо слухачі!

Сьогодні Зіслання Святого духа. Згадуємо ту подію, коли то Дух Святий у виді вогнених язиків сходить на апостолів. Це свято одне з найбільш торжественних Свят у літургічному житті церкви. Ми чомусь мало звертаємо на нього увагу. Радше говоримо про Різдво, бо там Син Божий народився, показався нам людиною, бо став одним з нас, щоб нам допомогти, нас піднести. Рівно ж досить говоримо про Великдень. Через 40 днів приготовляємося відповідним постом до Празника Празників, до Воскресіння Господа Бога і Спаса Нашого Ісуса Христа. Розуміємо, що і ми воскреснемо разом з ним. Його воскресіння є своєрідним народженням до вічного життя.

Зіслання Святого Духа, натомість, якось залишаємо збоку. Слід нам пам’ятати, що цей празник є днем народження Христової церкви. По воскресінні апостоли були збентежені, не знали що їм робити, не розуміли з якої причини Христос помер, і як то що він знова їм являється живим показуючи їм пробиті руки і ноги. Вони ніяк не можуть збагніти веліку тайну спасіння людського роду, і їхню в цьому участь. Що їм робити, як поводитися. Прегадуємо, навіть у день Вознесіння питаються вони Христа, “чи нарешті відбудуєш Ізраїльске царство”. Щойно з нинішним днем вони розуміють, і йдуть проповідуючи добру новину, і життя своє віддадуть за Христа який себе позволив на хрест розіп’яти і який своєю власною силою воскрес із мертвих, та вознісся до свого Отця Небесного, але і нас не залешаючи.

Святий Дух не зявляться в перше при сьогоднішмому святі. Можемо його добачати навіть і в Старому Завіті. У першій книзі Буття так читаємо: “У початку сотворив Бог небо і землю. Земля була пуста і порожна і Дух Господній ширяв над водами.” Очивидно це той самий Дух що над йорданськими водами буди ширяти у виді голуба коли то Христос хреститься від Івана.

При виході Ізраїля з Єгипту вогнений стовп супроводяав Ізраїльтян який немов хмара закривав вид перед Єгептянами. Ясна річ що вогнентй стовп нагадує вогнені язики з нинішного свята, а хмара пригадує нам оту хмару яка закрила Христа перед апостолами Петром, Яковом та Іваном при Переображенні. Коли то xмара зникла, вони побачили самого Христа. Вже бiльше не було потрiбно Мойсея, як найбiльшого законодавця Старого Завiту, не було пот­рiбно Iллi як пророка старозавiтнього, бо Христос є найбiльшим законодав­цем i в Ньому сповниння усякого пророцтва.

Дуx Святий вiдкриває нам Христа бiльше i бiльше. Пiд Його впливом краще розумiємо своє завдання, пiдносимося на вищий щабель досконалости.

Святий Дуx зiйшов на апостолiв у Єрусалимi, у тiй самiй свiтлицi, такзв. Горiшнiй кiмнатi, у якiй вiдбулася Тайна Вечеря, i у якiй Господь з'явився своїм учням у сам день Воскресiння. Там апостоли з Марiєю i побожними жiнками ввесь час перебували на молитвi. Чекали чогось, що Христос обiцяв. I самi не були певнi чого. Аж ось зашумiло з неба, немов подув буйного вiтру, i з’явилися їм подiлинi язики, мов вогонь, i осiв на кожному з ниx. Тодi усi почали говорити рiзними мовами, так що їx усi могли розумiти. Коли пiдчас будови Вавилонської вежi помiшалися язики, i один другого не мiг зрозумiти, i мусiли перервати Боговi осоружне дiло, тут при Зiсланнi Святого Дуxа приxодить зрозумiння мов i зачинається дiло Боговi вгодне, народжується Св. Церква.

Чому Св. Дуx зявляється у видi вогнениx язикiв? Второзаконня 4, 24 так каже: БОГ Є ВОГОНЬ! Вогонь спалює i очищає, вогонь дає свiтло i зiгрiває. Так само i Дуx запалює нас до боговгодного діла, спалює невідповідне, очищає від гріхів, просвітляє уми і зігріває душі і серця любовю.

Святий Дух зявився у виді вогнених ЯЗИКІВ на знак, що апостоли мають уже проповідувати Христову Добру Новину. Перед Вознесінням Господь навчав своїх апостолів: “Ви приймете силу з висоти, що на вас зійде, і будете моїми свідками в Єрусалимі, у всій Юдеї та Самірії і аж до кінців землі. І вони були свідками. Нє боячися нічого, несли вони Слово Боже до всіх закутках землі, приносили радість для засмучених, подавали допомогу потребуючим.

Святий дух просвітив невчених рибаків, і вони стали славними проповідниками і богословами. Після першої проповіді у Єрусалимі 3,000 слухачів одержали хрещення.

Дух Святий і нас просвічує і нам дає натхніння до добрих діл. Під його проводом, ми одержуємо силу на геройські вчинки.

Кир Інокентій Лотоцький у своїй книжці Ти мій батько, мій Бог, скеля спасіння мого так пише: Святий Дух постійно діє у Христовій церкві Він є душею церкви, він освячує її і опікується усіма членами Церкви. В тайні св. хрещення ми народилися для Бога водою і Духом Святим. У тайні миропомазання ми одержали “печать святого, всесильного і поклоняємого Духа”. Св. Дух підчас божественної Літургії перемінює хліб у тіло Христове і вино в кров Христа Богочоловіка. Силою Святого Духа ми одержуємо прощення провин у св. Тайні сповіді, як це сказав Христос спаситиль своїм апостолам: Прийміть св. Духа. Кому відпустити гріхи відпустяться їм , а кому затримаєте, затримуються (Ів, 20,22).

Всі добрі натхнення, всі просвічення душі, всі добрі постанови походять від Святого Духа. Святий Дух дає силу мученикам та ісповідникам віри мужньо переносити всі переслідування ради царства небесного. У посланні до Коринтян читаємо слова: “Ніхто не може сказати: “Господь Ісус”, як лиш під впливом Святого Духа” (1 кр. 12,3)

Апостол Павло в посланні до коринтян пригадує радісну правду: “Хіба ви не знаєте, що ви храм Божий, і що дух Божий у вас перебуває. (І кр. 3,16), а в посланні до Римлян він пише: “Дух Божий живе у вас. (Рим. 8,9) Ми є мешканням, храмом, живою церквою, бо Св. Дух мешкає в нас. Це наше щастя, наша велич, наш привілей, наша найвища гідність. Тому апостол закликає: “Не засмучуйте Святого Духа, що ним ви назнаменовані на день відкуплення (Еф. 4,30) Кожна наша невдяка, кожна провина і кожна невірність засмучує св. Духа, нашого царя небесного і нашого утішителя.

Постараймося кожного дня молитися оцю молитву до Святого Духа, якою ми і почали сьогоднішню радіопередачу.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

Today is the Sunday of Pentecost.  This is the day when the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples and empowered them to become Apostles of Christ.  Pentecost was a transforming event for the disciples and our Church.  On the day of Pentecost, when the seven weeks of Easter had come to an end, Christ's Passover was fulfilled with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon His disciples.  The Church was then made manifest to the world on Pentecost.  The Holy Spirit, having come upon them, empowered the disciples to continue Christ's ministry on earth; they were transformed into people of great courage and faith, who were sent out to preach the Gospel to an unbelieving world.  Many of them would ultimately be martyred for their faith.  These fishermen and tax collectors became the leaders of our Church.  These men who fled when Jesus was arrested were now speaking out and converting others to our faith. 

Pentecost was such a significant event because through the gift of the Holy Spirit, our return to paradise is achieved; we are elevated to the Heavenly Kingdom, and become once more the children of God.  We are all familiar with the dramatic story of Pentecost recounted in the Acts of the Apostles (2:2-12), complete with a rush of wind and tongues of fire. When the day of Pentecost came, the Apostles were all together in one place. It was ten days after Jesus had gone back to heaven. Before he had left them, He had made a promise. "The Holy Spirit will come to you. He will give you power to tell people about me."  For ten days, the Apostles and some other followers of Jesus had stayed together, praying, and waiting.  But now the great day had come.  Suddenly, a noise like a strong wind filled the whole house and the followers saw something that looked like flames of fire, falling on each person there. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak different languages.  At that time Jerusalem was full of Jewish visitors from all over the world.  They were all surprised, because each one of them heard the Apostles speaking in their own language. They were completely amazed at this. They said, "Look! Are these not the same men that we heard speaking from Galilee? But we hear these men now telling in our own languages about the great things God has done!"  That day, over 3,000 people became followers of Christ and were baptized. They spent the rest of their time in Jerusalem learning all about Jesus from the Apostles before returning home.

This is certainly the biblical story that we have read and interpreted many times throughout our lives, we know it so well that we could even imagine ourselves viewing it from the sidelines, as spectators.  But this Pentecost, we also need to focus on the ‘inside story’ about what Pentecost means for you and me.  What is the Pentecost that is going on inside each of us that finds expression in our daily lives?  I have heard many priests explain how Pentecost boils down to grace and how each of us receives this grace in the form of the Holy Spirit, but it is also important for us to understand that we do not always express this grace in the same way.  One way to look at the purpose of Pentecost is that it is inviting people into a story with a better preface and a better ending than the stories that we each express with our own lives.  These days, many people do not always know the basics of the story of salvation.  So our meditation on Pentecost should take the form of an invitation to the story of Pentecost in progress in our lives.  St. Paul tells us to “Turn to the Lord and the veil will be removed.”  Direct our attention toward what God is doing in our inner life; behold the ‘inside story’ capable of transforming our outside story.  Pentecost is a story with a more reliable Protagonist.  The Protagonist of this sacred story is God, and “Such is the confidence we have through Christ toward God, not that we are competent of ourselves to claim anything as coming from us; our competence is from God” (2 Corinthians 3:4).  So that with unveiled faces, beholding the glory of God - as though reflected in a mirror - we too can all be transformed into God’s image from one degree of glory to another.

The Holy Spirit is a breath, a great wind, and what matters most is not to stand amazed at the power of this breath, but to allow ourselves to be ‘guided’ by it, like Jesus was during his earthly life.  When we talk about feeling the impulse of the Holy Spirit, some people feel it has to be a major occurrence.  Something earth shattering that changes the world around us.  But I have discovered that the impulse we receive from the Holy Spirit can be a small event, in fact, something that may only impact one person, but is still none the less, a powerful working of the Holy Spirit that is taking place through us.  We may not all do great things like the Apostles or the Saints, but we can all do small things every day, through the passion and guidance of the Holy Spirit.  Sometimes, we do them unknowingly, but I assure you that the presence of the Lord is there.  The Holy Spirit of God is present when any human being takes another human being seriously.  We have all been changed and transformed by things that happen to us in our own lives, and the Spirit of Pentecost drives people together by transforming them into compassionate and courageous people of faith.  Pentecost is found in the meals on wheels providers, the hospital visitors, the AA leaders, the Peace Corp volunteers, the college kids building homes for the Habitat for Humanity, those who help “at risk” kids in our inner cities, the red cross volunteers, and all the other countless charitable organization throughout the world that reach out to people in need.  We have all felt it - even in the small and meek things that we do for one another.  And as we take a look at what happened on Pentecost many years ago, we see that God changed the lives of His people.  The Holy Sprit, given to us through Christ, is what allows our souls to undergo an amazing transformation.  We are better equipped to see the world as God intends.  And the impact of the Holy Spirit, working its grace through the soul is what changes our lives for the better.

During WWII, the Japanese took prisoner a company of soldiers.  For a long time the prisoners lived in a state of hatred and resentment toward each other as well as their captors. They lived like animals, stealing food from one another, and letting the sick and the starving die. God had no part in their lives. One day a Japanese officer lined them all up and reported that a shovel was missing. The guilty man was asked to step forward and identify himself and admit his theft of the shovel.  No one stepped forward. Then the officer threatened to shoot all of them if the guilty one did not speak up. There was no response. So the officer prepared to start killing prisoners until the guilty one spoke. Just then one man stepped forward.  The rest of the men were dismissed and the prisoner was taken away and tortured to death.  A few days later it was learned that one of the Japanese guards had miscounted and that there was no missing shovel. Then it was finally realized by the other prisoners that the man had stepped forward only to protect the others from harm and had died to save their lives. This caused the whole atmosphere in the prison camp to change. Now they began to love and care for each other. Their relationship with God started to mean something to them. Many turned to Christ and started reading the Bible. One of the prisoners was inspired because of this to enter the seminary after the war.  It all started when one man decided to follow the example of Christ, to listen to the urging of the Holy Spirit and sacrifice his life to save his comrades. The words of Jesus spring to mind, "Greater love has no man than to give his life for his friends."

We are not God - not any of us - but Pentecost serves to remind us that we are a part of God, members of His Body - the Church. When we follow Jesus and consecrate our life to Him, as did the original twelve disciples, something wonderful happens. We begin to feel the presence of God within us through the impulse of the Holy Spirit - which empowers our faith and transforms us into a people of God - a holy people of faith.  The gifts of the Holy Spirit are truly numerous and great.  St. Paul speaks of them in his letter to the Galatians: “But the fruit of the Spirit is charity and joy, peace and patience, kindness and goodness, faith, modesty, and continence” (Galatians 5: 22-23).  St. John Chrysostom in his homily on the feast of Pentecost wrote: "The all gracious God today bestowed upon us gifts, too great to be adequately expressed in words.  Therefore, let us all rejoice together, and while rejoicing, let us praise our God.  For I ask, what was given to us for our salvation that was not given to us by the Holy Spirit?  The Holy Spirit freed us from slavery, adopted and called us to the freedom of the children of God.  From this fountain flows prophecies, the grace of healing, and all the other gifts and fruits with which the Church is able to adorn itself."  My brothers and sisters, through the Holy Spirit, we are able to call God, Father; we are able to become partakers of the grace of Jesus Christ, to be called the sons and daughters of light, and to share in His everlasting glory.  As children of light, we have found the true light, and we worship the undivided Trinity for having saved us.
