+ СІХ!

Дорогі радіо слухачі!

Звичайно на кінці кожної відправи в церкві при отпусті ми чуємо слова: “Бо Він (тобто Христос) благий і чоловіколюбець.”

“Християнська побожність працювала від віків над тим, щоб Христові Спасителеві, як Богові і як чоловікові віддати як найповнішу честь”, писав Митрополит Андрей Шептицький. “Церква установляла празник за празником, щоб відповісти цій побожності християн, та щоб вести їх до найбільшої любови Христа. Природно, що і любов Христа-Чоловіка супроти людей мусіла ставитись щораз виразнішим предметом християнського культу. Вдумуючися у любов Христа, християнські душі, церква, під проводом Св. Духа, що в ній живе і веде людські душі до пізнання і любови Бога, щораз більше усвідомлювала собі, що любов є причиною всього того, що Христос зробив для людей. Любов є товчком цілого Його поступування.”

Минулої п’ятниці святкували ми празник Христа Чоловіколюбця. Встановлений він нам на пригадку, що Господь нас полюбив безконечною любовю. Він прийшов задля нас, навчав нас, поради давав, хвороби лікував, чуда творив. Він своє життя віддав за нас, і коли було б потрібно Він не заввагав би ся це знова і знова повторити, хоча б і кожного дня аж до кінця цього видимого світу, до того часу коли сам прийде судити живих і мертвих. Нема любови, що могла б дорівнювати Його любові, нема жертви, подібної до Його жертви на хресті. Розширивши руки на хрест, він обняв нас усіх, відкрив себе перед нами, що б ми могли також себе відкрити перед Ним. Наша відповідь на Його любов може бути двояка, і наша доля буде віддзеркалювати цю відповідь.

Перша з них нагадує повоження розбійника, який був по лівиці який, помимо болів в наслідок розп’яття, підсміхався з Христа: “Сином Божим назвав себе. А чи можеш це доказати. Ану зроби якесь чудо. Спаси себе і нас.” Він не бачив несправедливости, яка була зроблена Христові, він не бачив Господньої доброти. Він чув тільки це, що інші про Нього говорили коли Його розпинали.

Як часто і ми готові підсміхатися з інших, тому, що інші нам сказали, щось про них поганого, навіть ящо це і не зовсім так. Як лехко інших засуджувати, бо ми переконані, що вони на це заслужули. А любов, а милосердя, а прощення – ми на це постійно забуваємо.

Друга наша відповідь нагадує поводження розбійника по правиці, який став у обороні Христа кажучи до свого судруга: “Хіба ти не боїшся Бога? Ми засуджені по справедливості, а Він же ніякого зла не зробив.”

Цікаво, що цей чоловік дійшов до цього зрозуміння. Ціле його життя перейшло на марно, можливо кривдячи інших, хоча ми цього не знаємо, можливо відбираючи від тих що мали забагато і даючи тим що не мали нічого, цього також нам не відомо. Факт є, що він був розп’ятий разом з Невинним, з Тим, що навіть „надломаної гилячки не хотів відломляти і який похилу травичку піднімав, що криве випростовув”, що хворих лікував, а навіть і з мертвих воскришав.

Цікаво, чи він коли небудь чув Господню промову, чи слухав Його цікаві притчі, що частина з них запасані у євангеліях для нашого повчання? Правдоподібно відчував він вищість Христову, у тій хвилині коли Господь не нарікав, але молився за тих що його розіп’яли: “Прости їм, Отче, бо вони не знають, що роблять.”

Потиснув би він тепер Його правицю і з подякою поцілував би її, коли б вона не була прибита до хреста, так як і його. Перед Ним упав би на коліна, якщо б не був як і Він розіп’ятий. “Згадай мене Господи; коли прийдеш у царство твоє” – промовив розбійник. Усі провини змиті, усе забулося, і не буде ніхто згадувати брак любови продовж цілого його життя. Одне слово і вистарчить. Одне слово і спасіння приходить. У своїй любові Господь все прощає і каже розбійникові: “Ще сьогодні будеш зі мною в раю.”

Що б і ми, дорогі в Христі, могли почути оці Господні слова у хвилині коли будемо відходити з цього світу, а почуємо їх, оскільки зуміємо вести наше життя дорогою любови, оскільки матимимо милосердя до покривджених, співчуття до терплячих, оскільки будемо в інших бачити Христа і жити по Хресті, і бути Христом для інших.

У євангелію 3 неділі Христос каже: “Не журіться, що будете їсти і що будете пити і в що одягнитеся. Якщо Ваш Отець небесний годує птиці у повітрі та одягає лелії в полі, що ані не жнуть ані не прядуть, то кілько буде більше вас, маловіри. Шукайти перше царства небесного, а все інше вам додастя.

Нема чим журитися що нам щось забракне. У Господі є повнота усього, Він дає нам усе потрібне до життя, і більше від того. Він дає нам вистарчально дарів, щоб іншим дарувати. Той, що роздає, не від свого дає, але від Господа. Той, що показує любов ближньому, не він сам робить щось надзвичайного, але тільки це, що від нього чи від неї вимагається. Усі бо ми покликані жити життям любови, і якщо не живемо таким життям, ми немов говоримо Господеві: “Зроби для нас якесь чудо, що б ми були певними, що Ти про нас дбаєш.” А Він насправді робить чуда кожної хвилини, нераз і нами послуговуючися. Коли скажемо іншим добре слово, це не буде вимагати великого зусилля з нашої сторони, а для тих, яким ми це сказали, це може бути незаперечний доказ, що їх Господь любить. Зробимо добре діло, не ми зробили, але Господь через створив чудо через нас.

Стрічав я у свойому житті багато осіб, які зуміли поставити Бога на перше місце, і шукати тільки сповнювання його Волі, не журячися собою. Особа, яка може все віддати, дістає багато більше. Матеріяльно вона не буде багата, але спокій у ній перебуватиме, і вона в дійсності буде Божою дитиною і братом чи систрою нашого Господа. Хвороби, які прийдуть прийме з радістю, випробування з терпеливістю. Покаже іншим любов, не зважаючи на труднощі, не дивлячися, щоб рівне отримати. Ніхто не буде знати терпіння, ніхто не віддячиться за добро. Але ж це і не важне. Що робить лівиця, нехай не знає правиця. Господь бачить і Він вдоволений, а це є найважніше.

Постараймося передавати Христову любов. Нічого бо іншого не маємо. Любов побільшуємо роздаванням. Коли затримаємо її тільки для себе, то ми її втратимо, а без любови, ми насправді виявляємся нічим. Амінь

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

God has always wanted a relationship with humanity. If we look from the beginning of our history in faith, from the account of creation to the very end of the scriptures, it becomes apparent that God desires to have his dwelling place with us. This is the story of the tabernacle, this is the story of the Solomon's Temple, this is the story of the Synagogue, this is the story of Jesus Christ, and it is the story of our Church. God's desire to be in a relationship with the whole of humanity! God is seeking us, speaking to us, calling us to deeper relationships with Him. God never moves away from us, it is always we who move away from Him. And this, my brothers and sisters is the reason Jesus was born, the reason He lived, taught, died and rose again. So, that we, all of humanity, can know that we are loved by God and share in the glory of His Kingdom!  But in order to do this, we must be willing to follow Christ and His teachings, and place our trust in Him.

The Gospel for the last two Sundays has shown us that, in order to follow Jesus, earthly preoccupations must be abandoned.  We may ask ourselves: But how then am I suppose to live? The Gospel for the third Sunday after Pentecost puts us on guard against this anxiety (Matthew 6:22-33).  Jesus tells us that we must unify our inner life: “If therefore thine eye be single, they whole body shall be full of light… No man can serve two masters… You cannot serve God and man.  Therefore I say unto you, take no thought for your life, what you will eat, or what you will drink, or for your body, what you shall wear.”  These words of Scripture leave us with comforting thoughts.  If the Heavenly Father feeds the birds of the air, if He clothes the lilies of the field with colors more glorious then those of Solomon himself, then imagine how much more He will see our needs. Yet these words must be understood with discernment.  There are men and women whom the Lord calls to follow him in absolute poverty.  But the majority of people have family and social responsibilities, and they have to face them through work.  As far as earthly goods are concerned, our Lord does not condemn the prudence which is called for by both our livelihood and charity, but he does condemn avarice and the anxious care which indicates a lack of faith in Him.  “Your Heavenly Father knows you are in need of all these things… But seek thee first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”  These are two main ideas of our faith: first of all, our desire for the Kingdom of God, and secondly, trusting in the Lord’s goodness for life’s necessities. 

Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky once wrote, "Meditating on the love of Christ, the Church, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit who dwells in her and leads the faithful to the love and knowledge of God, has become more and more conscious of the fact that love is the basic cause of all that Christ has done for mankind, and in accepting this love we become more and more faithful to the teachings of Christ."  In St. Matthew's Gospel, Christ reminds us of the need to place our faith and trust in God, Who is the giver and sustainer of all things.  For even the birds of the air and the flowers of the earth depend on our Heavenly Father for their every need. "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.”  Jesus is teaching us that experiencing anxiety over material needs is unspiritual.  Perhaps it may seem natural, but it denotes a lack of confidence in the love of God.  The question before us today is - How can our confidence and faith be sustained?  And the answer Christ gives is simple.  Just look at the birds and flowers, they do not worry, because God provides for their every need.  Only man has become so dependent on gathering earthly commodities, but money eventually fails.  Material possessions can give the allusion of security, and even keep some from depending upon God at all.  It is not our lack of material possessions, but rather our lack of confidence in Christ that remains the greatest obstacle in our faith. 

The Lord asks us a lot of questions in today’s Gospel.  If you read scripture carefully you will see He asks many questions: sometimes implied questions and sometimes direct questions like this: “Is not life more important than food and the body more important than clothing" (Matthew 6:25)?”  We should be able to answer this question easily.  First of all, what is life?  The Lord made us for life to be formed into His image. This is the life the Lord is speaking of.  The Lord had in His mind, when He created mankind, that we would know Him intimately.  So He made mankind in His Image.  Life is for us to see God; to polish that image within us, so that when we seek Him face to face, we will not be afraid, it will not be as through a dark glass; it will not be with terror, it will not be with shame. It will be with great joy and knowledge of God. This is what life is. Life is not what we do in our day-to-day activities; Life is not what we desire that is worldly; or even what we need that is earthly. We need food, we need water, we need clothing, we need shelter, and we need other things. But those things are not life; those things only serve to sustain the body so that we can learn of what true Life is - that is to be conformed to the image of God’s Son.

"Seek first, His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33).  Faith in Christ is the very foundation of our Christian life!  It is when we lose faith and continue to worry over our wants and situations, that we lose sight of God.  Worry immobilizes us.  It renders us helpless and ineffective.  We are drawn in different directions, and cannot decide which way to go.  All too often we are consumed by worry, because we take our eyes away from the Lord.  Christ reminds us that the things of this world, our concerns for what we want most in life, should not capture our hearts or afflict our senses with anything other than our desire for God.  The Lord is the answer to all our needs, the peace that reconciles all worry.  And what should satisfy our hearts and serve as the focus of our prayers: “Every good and perfect gift coming down to us from the Father of Lights”.  There is no need to place our worries on material wealth, when our highest desire, the most glorious possession any human heart can hope to attain – is knowing Christ intimately and having a place in the Kingdom of God.  Our worries and possessions are merely consequential things, when we are willing to desire and accept - that our Lord is the God of all our needs – and that we are made in His image and therefore loved and cared for by God the Almighty.

The Lord works in mysterious ways to provide for our needs, we hear about it every day on the local news or read about it in the newspapers – people living in difficult times who are helped by others at just the right moment.  It reminded me of a story I had heard some time ago, about our former mayor, Jimmy Griffin, who was laid to rest this past Thursday near our Basilica in Lackawanna.  There are many stories to be told about a man who was Buffalo’s longest and perhaps most memorable mayor, but one story in particular pops to mind.  I believe it was back in the 1990’s when our illustrious mayor was considering running for a higher political office.  He was the traditional Irishman, a man who went throughout the city and knew his people well, and was good to his word.  One particular day, he was apparently out with members of the police department when they received word that a Buffalo man was holding his three children hostage at gunpoint.  Times were hard throughout the city, several companies had pulled out of the area, and people faced some serious hardships.  Well, our former major went to the scene of the hostage situation and was able to strike up a conversation with the man who was holding his children hostage.  He found out that this man was out of a job and desperate for work.  He needed to feed his children and support his family.  Mayor Griffin managed to earn the man’s trust and entered the facility where he was holding his children hostage.  As soon as Jimmy Griffin saw the man changing his youngest child’s diaper, he knew this man never intended to harm his children or anyone else, so he struck up a deal with him.  He told the man that if he ended this now, he would personally see to it that he was not arrested and he would even help this man find a job.  And as good as his word, the major loaded up the man and his family in his car, drove them home, and found that man a job.  Jimmy Griffin was not always conventional, and like anyone, he had his share of adversaries, but he was a man of his word and he helped people in need.  So the next time you wonder how you will overcome a difficult situation, remember that the Lord works through people every day, and you never know who He will send to your door to help you find just what you need.

Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky said, "In the Church where the faithful venerate Christ and place their faith and trust in Him, the whole spiritual life begins to flourish.  People flock to the Church, the numbers of those who receive Holy Eucharist increases, vices begin to slowly disappear from among the people, concord and love reign as parents come to learn what a treasure their children are to them, and children learn to love and respect their parents.  With Jesus, among the faithful, all things begin to change within the Church, just as when spring arrives and all nature awakens to new life.  And the Savior is able to see the fire of love which His heart burns, being born and growing among the souls of the faithful in His Church."  When arks are built, lives are saved.  When staffs are raised, seas will open.  When a lunch is shared, thousands are fed.  And when a garment is touched, whether by the hand of an anemic woman in Galilee, or by the prayers of a beggar in Bangladesh - Jesus stops.  He stops and responds to all those who believe.  So brethren, be great believers and trust in God - little faith will bring our souls to Heaven, but great faith will bring Heaven to our souls.
