Дорогі радіо слухачі!

Сьогодні Сиропустна неділя а завтра вже початок Великого Посту. Через 40 днів постараємося розважувати над Господньою наукою, Його страстями і смертю, та нашим відношенням до розп’ятого і згодом воскреслого Христа.

Спеціяльно звертатимо увагу тут на молитву і на піст.

Що до молитви ми недавно чули приклад молитви митаря і фарисея.

Фарисий чесна людина, працьовита, поважана іншими, який одначи вихвалює себе. Ясна річ, що нема нікого досконалого, але він представляє себе таким. І дякує Богові, що він не подібний до тих що Бога зневажають, так яка наприклад отой митар, що ось зухвало прийшов на молитву, щоб ніби то себе показати, що він не такий як про нього говорять. І фарисей пішов до дому радіючи, що Бог з нього вдоволиний, а насправді Христос фарисея не оправдав, через його засуджування інших і його самозвеличування. Фарисей не одержав нагороди від Бога, бо більше журився, щоб перед людьми виглядати досконалим, думаючи, що тільки зовнішним сповнинням закону сповнив Божу волю.

Митар натомість бив себе у груди кажучи: „Боже милостивий, будь мені грішному”. Він нічого доброго не зробив, і не мав чим хвалитися, але також не старався себе оправдувати, що б люди змінили думку про нього. В його серці відбулася величезна зміна, яка показалася через оту його молитву, і це вистарчало для того, щоб Христос його оправдав, хоча люди не змінили думки про нього і дальше його засуджували. Ясна річ, що зі своєю молитвою митар не закінчив свою внутрішню переміну, бо зміна внутрі має показатися через ціле життя, у діях, у словах у думках.

Що до посту так пригадує нам Христос у нинішному євангельскому читанні (Мт. 6,14-210): „Коли постите не будьте сумні як лицеміри, бо вони виснажують своє обличчя, щоб люди їх бачили як вони постять. Істинно кажу ван, вони вже одержали свою нагороду. Ти ж, коли постиш, намасти свою голову і обмий своє обличчя, щоб не показати людям, що ти постиш, але Отцеві Твоєму, що перебуває в тайні; і Отець Твій, що бачить таємне, віддасть тобі.”

Дуже часто ми робемо щось доброго, але стараємося робити так, що б інші були свідками цього, бо нам здається, що коли того ніхто не завважить, то наші добрі діла не будуть мати багато вартости. Коли наприклад Святий отець Миколай помагав потребуючим, то він завжди так робив, щоб того ніхто не бачив. Подібно робили усі святі, яким залежало на Божому а не на людському признанні. Робимо бо добро на Славу Божу, молимося на Славу Божу, їмо на Славу Божу і постимо на Славу Божу. Все що робимо, робім з думкою про Господа, не очікуючи і не вимагаючи нічого, то в такий спосіб одержемо нагороду від Того, що дав нам силу і здоровя і здібності все виконувати на Його Славу.

Якщо від людей сподіємося похвали то на тому і залешиться. Похвалять нас згадуючи добрими словами, поплескають по плечах, а згодом забудуть, а пізніше може ще і зганьблять. Коли ми допустимось чогось невідповідного у їхніх очах, то і добро нами зроблине, для них перестане мати вартість. А ми і дальше будемо звертати увагу на це, що б людям подобатися, і так поволи забудемо, що Всевишньий від нас вимагає, та що йому подобається.

„Не зберайте скарбів на землі, а радше на небі, бо де твій скарб там буде і серце твоє”, закінчує Христос. Земні скарби зітліють, злодії їх вкрадуть, грабіжники присвоять, згорять вони у вогні, коли будемо переходити через двері які ведуть до Небесного Єрусалиму стережені Серафимом. А небесні скарби засвітять сильніше, і ми самі опинимося у світлі, бо на суді Божім не знайшлися нагими, бо станули по Господній правиці.

Дорогі в Христі! 40 днів посту перед нами. Число 40 є числом приготування до чогос велико і нового. 40 днів потопу, 40 років подорожі через пустинню, 40 днів Христового посту, 40 днів від Воскресіння до Вознесіння. Ми постимо 40 днів, щоб відповідно приготовитися до Христового Воскресіння.

„Піст не є новітним винаходом”, каже Св. Василій Великий, „але скарб по батьках. Усе, що давне, гідне похвали. Пошануй же стародавність посту. Він такий давний як саме людство.” І додає „Тому, що ми не постили нас прогнано з раю. Чинім, отже, піст, щоб повернутися до нього.

А як ми повинні постити?

У своїй книжці „Пізнай свій обряд” о. Юліян Катрій так пише: „Хоч наші часи принесли багато змін, щодо церковних законів, традиції і дісціпліни, і хоч по ІІ-му Ватиканському Соборі прийшло велике злагіднення всіх постів взагалі, включно з Великим постом, все таки і сьогодні час Чотиридесятниці має своє велике значіння для нашого духовного життя. Може сьогодні, задля різних причин ми не в силі так строго постити, як постили колись наші предки, але і сьогодні тяжить на нас обов’язок духовного посту, тобто боротьби з нашими гріхами і злими нахилами, обов’язок молитви, практики чеснот та добрих діл. І якраз оця духовна обнова є властивою і найважливішою ціллю Великого Посту.

Це є час, коли повинні ми зупинитися і поглянути на пройдений шлях, щоби перевірити себи, зрозуміти чи ми сповняли Божу Волю, чи ми прийняли усі труднощі котрих ми зустріли на цьому шляху, як Боже випробуванння, щоб загартувати себе, зробити кращими. Христос сам постив у пустинні, і в такий спосіб приготовляв себе до своєї публичної діяльности. Там то його спокушав диявол, отой світлоноша, що його світло стало темрявою. А кілько більше ми можемо впасти у спокусу? У таких тяжких хвилинах надіймося тільки на поміч згори, від того що і сам перемагав спокусника.

Спаситель нераз картав фарисеїв за лицемірство під час посту, звертаючи увагу своїм апостолам, а з ними і нам, щоб берегтися фсрисейської закваски. Про духів зла нагадував, що їх можна вигнати тільки молитвою та постом. З історії життя ранніх християнських спільнот довідуємося про їхні довгі й суворі пости. Хоча жили вони життям праведників, що наближалося до Господньої святости, все ж таки вважали, що піст конче потрібний для ще більшої досконалости.

Коли постимо ми краще зможемо зрозуміти таємниці Божої Волі щодо нас. Ми спроможні з'єднатися з Христом, якого також спокушувано, з якого сміялися і на хрест розіп'яли, і разом з Ним надіємося воскреснути у Його славі, опинитися по Його правиці.

Використаймо цю нагоду Великого посту, щоб призадуматися над своїм життям, зрозуміти, як далеко чи близько ми є від Бога, в молитві та покаянні дозволити Божій ласці знова просякнути нас, щоб Мир Христовий запанував у нас, та що б ми діждалися радости Христового Воскресіння. Амінь!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

Today is the Sunday of Forgiveness, and it is also the day before we enter into Great Lent.  We are given a blueprint for our life in the Gospel reading today.  God is ready to forgive us, but are we ready to be forgiving?  The Holy Scripture says, the Saints say, the Holy Spirit says: forgive, forgive, and forgive.  Jesus lets us know that if we refuse to forgive, then we really have not grasped our own need for forgiveness.  But when we have our eyes fixed on the cross, and the pain and suffering that Jesus endured in order to forgive us and cleanse us from our sin, it can appear pretty foolish not to forgive those who have trespassed against us.  By forgiving one another, we are ultimately trusting that God is in control.  By forgiving, we release our own right to get even, allowing the forgiveness that God grants us to flow through our hearts.  True forgiveness is demonstrated in our willingness to pray for and to facilitate good things happening in the lives of those who have hurt us.   

Today Gospel reading, taken from the book of St. Matthew (6:14-21), opens with this precept of forgiveness.  “If you forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, then neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”  The fact that the Church has chosen this verse from scripture shows its clear intention of making forgiveness the dominant theme as we enter into our Great Fast.  Truthfully, forgiveness does not come easy, people get hurt and sometimes lives are changed forever, but since we are made in the image of Christ, then we too must be forgiving – we must be willing to forgive one another and to allow the Lord to help us forgive ourselves.  Forgiveness is something we may think about every day – we are often faced with situation where people hurt us – but is our forgiveness something that we truly demonstrate time after time after time?  When Peter asked the Lord if he should forgive seven times, Jesus replied, "Not seven times. But I tell you seventy times seven."  St. Paul reminds us that love keeps no record of wrongs.  Love covers a multitude of sins.  We should learn to forgive as God forgives.  When we perform an act of kindness, or offer our sincere prayers, especially for the benefit of one who may have hurt us - we can change our own attitude as well as theirs.   But I have found that one of the most difficult things to forgive, one of the hardest hurdles to overcome is how we forgive ourselves.  The slate does not wipe so clean when it comes to our own conscience, our own offenses, the ways in which we know we have hurt others.  But those are the occasions when we need to pray to the Lord more fervently, because only He can wash away all sin and all tragedy, only He can help us remove the nails that pierce at our very souls, and only He can make us whole again.

As I grow older in years, raising a child of my own, I have come to learn that life is full of many things that are beyond our control, whether we like it or not, but we do have certainty in one thing - our faith - which tells us that God is with us at all times and in every instance.  It is not on our forgiveness, any more than on our goodness that the world's healing hinges, but rather on the forgiveness of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  For when Jesus tells us to love our enemies, He gives, along with that command - the ability to love.  If we ask God for assistance in dealing with our past actions and reactions then it shall be given. If we ask God to hold our heart in His hand, He shall do so. If we ask the Lord to surround us, know that He will. Ask God for forgiveness, ask your brother or sister for forgiveness, ask yourself for forgiveness, and forgiveness will surround you.

I was with my son in the gift shop at Fatima Shrine.  Like any 5 year old, he ran through the shop like a whirlwind, trying to absorb as much as possible from his surroundings. But then my vivacious son stopped dead in his tracks – and gazed up at a life size statue of Christ on the cross, a crucifix that someone had carved from wood and stone.  It was painstakingly beautiful and my son was so enamored with it that he immediately started working his hands around the feet of Christ, touching them in a very gentle and curious way.  I then watched as his hands made their way around the rather large nail, and for a minute or so longer, my son was trying with all of his might to pull the nail out of the feet of Christ.  I said: ‘John Paul, you can’t remove the nails from Jesus, they won’t budge no matter how hard we try’.  He just looked up at me with this wide eyed innocence, and then to my total amazement, he let go of the nail, leaned down, and kissed the feet of Christ, saying: “This will make Jesus feel better”!  As a mother, that was one of the most moving moments in my life, I was so proud of my son, and as a Ukrainian Catholic it made me realize that while none of us can remove the nails from the wounds of Christ, we can approach Him with utter humility and love, knowing very well that the nails He bore for us became the gift of our salvation.  My son kissed the Lord’s feet; he humbled himself with the heart of a child, and with what little understanding a five year old has about suffering, he believed that if he kissed those feet then he could make Jesus feel better.  We cannot undo the sins that we commit, no more than we can go back in time and remove the wounds from Christ, but we can seek His forgiveness, time after time after time.  Watching my son kissing the feet of Christ with such love and tenderness in his heart - was a very profound moment of faith that I will never forget.  Forgiveness is something we can still receive from the Lord, each and every day, but we must also be willing to forgive one another in order to receive true absolution.

It was at a church in Munich that Maria saw him, the former S.S. guard who had stood watch at the shower room door in the processing center at Flossenbürg Concentration Camp. He was the first of the actual jailers that Maria had seen since that time. And suddenly it was all there before her eyes - the roomful of mocking men, the heaps of clothing, the blood stained floors from the beatings, Olga's pain blanched face.  He came up to Maria as the Church was emptying, beaming and bowing. "How grateful I am for your message, Fraulein," he said. "To think that, as you say, 'He has washed my sins away'!"  His hand was thrust out to shake hers. And Maria, who had preached so often to people since she took her vows, on the need to forgive, kept her hand at her side.  Even as the angry, vengeful thoughts boiled through her, she saw the sin of them. Jesus Christ had died for this man; was she really going to ask for more?  Lord Jesus, she prayed, forgive me and help me to forgive him.  Maria tried to smile; she struggled to raise her hand.  She could not.  She felt nothing, not the slightest spark of warmth or charity. All she could remember was how during World War II, thousands of them were forced laborers in German quarries and arms production.  How the living conditions in Flossenbürg were extremely hard.  The way that malnutrition, the total lack of hygiene and medical care, and the brutality of the S.S. guards were the main causes of death for many of her life long friends, including her sister Olga, who suffered with her, day in and day out.  How the S.S. officers liked prisoners with tattoos because they made lampshades out of their skin.  And so again, Maria breathed a silent prayer.  Jesus, I cannot forgive him.  Please give him your forgiveness.  As Maria took this man’s hand, the most incredible thing happened.  From her shoulder, along her arm, and through her hand a current seemed to pass from her to him, while into Maria’s heart sprang a love for this stranger that almost overwhelmed her.  And so she discovered that it is not on our forgiveness, any more than on our goodness that the world's healing hinges, but rather on the forgiveness of Christ Jesus.  Forgiveness does not come easy, and in cases such as these, only the Lord is able to bring us the type of love and understanding that we truly need.

It was Mother Theresa who once said: ‘If we really want to love, then we must learn how to forgive’.  Forgiveness is above all a personal choice, a decision of the heart to go against the natural instinct to repay evil for evil, or to hold ourselves responsible for the things we seem unable to forgive.  The measure of such a decision is the love of God who draws us to Himself despite our sins.  The Lord wipes clean the slate of our iniquity.  And it has its perfect exemplar in the forgiveness of Christ, who on the Cross and in great agony, prayed: "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34).  If we can achieve a depth of forgiveness anything like that - which Jesus extends to us - we indeed shall find an incredible peace that will accompany us all our days.  St. Paul wrote, "We are to be kind and forgiving of each other, even as Christ forgave us" (Eph. 4:32).  When we really think about it, what hope has hatred ever given?  What argument has ever been aided by anger?  What problems have ever been resolved by revenge?  What tragedies have ever been avoided by blame?  Our brothers and sisters are much more than what we perceive they did to us.  You and I are more then a compilation of our sins and offenses.  We are God’s children on a journey toward remembering ourselves and our place in Heavenly Jerusalem.  Through Christ's actions, because of His Spirit living in us, we can here and now experience forgiveness, reconciliation, wholeness, and friendship with God, because Christ bridged the gap between salvation and sin, between life and death - between God and us!
