Дорогі радіо слухачі!

Бажаємо Вам усім щасливих Великодних свят. Нехай Воскреслий Господь принесе спокій у наші неспокійні серця. Хай Господь принесе мир у наше життя, по наших родинах і у відношенню поміж народами., щоб усі, менчі чи більші непорозуміння, чим скорше покінчилися.

З нагоди Христового Воскресіння вітаємо проводи усіх наших церков. Просім сьогодні воскреслого Христа, щоб Він привернув єдність у своїй святій але нажаль поділиній церкві, щоб католикі і православні та й усі що визнають Ісуса Господом могли чим скорше разом зійтися, щоб взяти участь у Його трапезі. Бо Господь за нас усіх народився і за нас усіх помер, і воскресіння його ми усі разом повині з радістю прославяти. Нехай Господь поблагословить нас усіх, щоб ми постійно ішли дорогами справедливости.

Сьогодні, у день світлого празника Христового Воскресіння, цими словами Канону Пасхи Свята Церква прославляє свого Спасителя, який воскрес із мертвих. Подібно як і колись, у перший день створення світу, нині із темряви гробу, що звичайно є темрявою небуття, розпачу і безвиході, засяяло божественне і несотворене світло життя. «Воскресіння день − просвітімося люди!» Це світло божества, яке випромінює із пошматованого і зраненого, але воскреслого тіла Ісуса, пронизує сьогодні всіх нас, проникає у нашу особисту темряву гріха, немочі, безнадії та зневіри і просвічує, оживляє та воскрешає − відкриває двері до нового життя.

Пасха Господня, яку ми сьогодні святкуємо, є запрошенням воскреслого Христа йти за Ним від смерті до життя. Сьогодні Він, як новий Мойсей, кличе нас покинути єгипетське рабство і служіння всьому тому, що забирає у нас гідність дітей Божих. Слуга Божий Папа Іван Павло ІІ, врочистий акт зарахування якого до лику блаженних – беатифікація – відбудеться 1 травня цього року, назвав це сучасне невільництво культурою смерті, тобто сукупністю правил сучасного життя, які пропагують насилля над ненародженими і хворими, поширюють зневагу християнської сім’ї та моралі, відбирають нашу свободу Божих дітей, примушують плазувати перед різноманітними земними ідолами та кумирами сучасності.

Цього року, святкуючи десятилітній ювілей приїзду цього святця до України, пригадаймо собі його девіз: «Христос – дорога, правда і життя!» –  та його батьківські слова, якими він наставляв нас на дорогу життя, записану в десяти Божих Заповідях. Пасха Господня – це рух цим шляхом, це початок мандрівки від землі до небес. А здійснюється цей рух силою Божою, яка сьогодні здолала найсильніше у цьому світі – саму смерть. «Від смерті бо до життя, і від землі до небес Христос Бог нас перевів». Не стіймо осторонь цього божественного прогресу, не даймо викинути себе на узбіччя життя фальшивими приманами, і тоді у цій пасхальній процесії, як об’єднаний Божий люд, вийдемо разом із нашим Спасителем від землі до небес.

Дорогі у Христі сини і доньки Української Греко-Католицької Церкви! У цей світлий день, прямуючи назустріч воскреслому Христові, ми не йдемо мовчки − ми «перемоги пісню співаємо»! Як важливо для нашого народу, що живе на різних континентах і сьогодні часом є розгубленим, пригніченим та зневіреним у власній гідності та силі, заспівати цю урочисту пасхальну пісню перемоги! Нехай сьогодні її величні слова вирвуться з кожного українського серця, пройнявши душу й тіло, і полинуть до небес. Бо ж у воскреслому Спасителеві є сила, незламність і перемога українського духу. «Господь − просвічення моє і спаситель мій. Кого маю боятися?» − співає пророк Давид (Пс. 26, 1).

Нехай ця пасхальна пісня перемоги залунає сьогодні у кожному нашому домі, у кожній родині! Разом із пасхальною крашанкою та благословенним хлібом несімо її сьогодні убогим і стражденним, в’язням і тим, хто поневіряється на рабських роботах, хворим і тим, хто сумує та плаче під тягарем щоденних життєвих хрестів. Нехай сила воскреслого Спасителя, який сьогодні переможно виходить із запечатаного гробу, буде вашим світлом, вашою силою та вашою піснею!

Закінчім тепер частиною Велекодного Послання наших єпископів тут у Америці.

Коли ми святкуємо Празник Воскресіння, шукаймо Господа на світанку і очікуймо разом з Мироносицями прихід справжнього Світла. Почувши під час Літургії проголошення, що Христос Воскрес із мертвих, ідімо та сповіщаймо цю добру новину усім. Намагаймося усувати те, що спричинює темряву у цьому світі і у нас самих. І завжди намагаймося освічувати наші родини, друзів та тих, хто довкола нас, радістю Воскреслого Христа!

Цього року особливим способом передаємо наше Великоднє привітання новообраному Голові та Батькові нашої Української Греко-Католицької Церкви, Блаженнішому Святославу Шевчуку, який був обраний, щоб бути наступником Блаженнішого Любомира Гузара під час останнього Синоду Єпископів в Україні. Ми молимося, щоб Господь зміцнив, просвітив та провадив його протягом наступних днів та років. Водночас висловлюємо нашу молитовну вдячність Блаженнішому Любомиру за роки мудрого батьківського проводу та за його постійний дух любові до нащої Церкви та народу. Нехай Господь обдаровує їх обидвох багатьма роками!

Воскресіння нашого Господа і Спасителя Ісуса Христа принесло нове і величне світло для світу. Сьогодні ми радіємо, тому що “....темрява зникає і справжнє світло вже світить.” (1Ів 2:8) Христос підніс нас із темряви гробу до світла вічного життя.

Нехай Бог обдаровує вас і ваших рідних, братів і сестер в нашій дорогій Україні та розкиданих по цілому світі, добрим здоров’ям, радістю, миром та задоволенням у день святкування цього великого Празника.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

Xrystos Voskres!  Of all the great feasts in the Ecclesiastical Year, none is more joyous and celebrated then the Feast we honor today: the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  ‘Christ is risen from the dead, by death He conquered death, and to those in the graves He granted life.’ St. John Chrysostom, in his sermon on the Resurrection, extols today’s feast with these words: “Where, O death, is your sting? Where, O Hades is your victory? Christ is risen and you have fallen. Christ is risen and the demons have been cast down. Christ is risen and the angels rejoice. Christ is risen and life reigns. Christ has risen from the dead, and has become the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.”  During this most joyous Easter feast, the Church calls upon Heaven and earth to unite in holy and divine rejoicing; the whole creation both visible and invisible celebrates Eternal joy in the Resurrection of our Lord.  Easter is indeed a time for extreme jubilation!  Today, we gather to celebrate Christ’s victory over death.  Because He is our Lord and our Savior, and His victory is our victory.  In celebrating His resurrection, we celebrate our own assurance of new life and renewed existence with our Heavenly Father. 

The fact that there is life in the resurrection is our source of faith.  We have hope because Jesus rose from the dead.   In the resurrection of Jesus, we believe in something greater, something better, and something Eternal.  We know that because Jesus lives today, we too can live with Him.   The resurrection of Christ is incontrovertible proof of His divinity.  When the Pharisees and the Scribes demanded a sign from Christ which would prove that He is the Son of God, He answered them saying that they will not receive a sign other than that of the Prophet Jonas: “For even Jonas was in the belly of a whale three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” (Matthew 12:30).  And so it happened, on the third day of His death, the glorious resurrection took place.  Centuries have come and gone, but our faith remains, because the Resurrection of Christ is the foundation of our Church and our belief in Eternal life.  On Easter morning the women who came to the grave to anoint Christ’s body found only an empty tomb. "He is risen as He said," an Angel told them. Later that day Jesus appeared to His disciples, and then, over the course of the next few weeks, to as many as five hundred people at one time.  Even "Doubting Thomas" did not wave his head in disbelief for long.  Easter changes everything!

When I was a child growing up, we had a neighborhood playground at the end of our street.  It was fabulous because we could play there all the time, thanks to a few older men who would faithfully mow the extensive lawn to maintain our playground area.  Regularly, once a week these older gentlemen could be seen on their riding lawn mowers circumventing the area foliage, trees, and flower beds through the vast acre of land. While I did not know these men very well, I pleasantly recall how one of them would sing while he mowed around the playground and baseball diamond with this wonderful operatic voice. He sang while he mowed and we kids just expected to hear his baritone songs wherever he went. This continued on for several years, until one spring a very strange thing happened; I noticed that when the same older gentleman came to mow our field of play, there was no more singing. I remember thinking it was rather strange, but I was too busy enjoying the beautiful spring day to really ask about his silence.  The next week there was still no singing and strangely enough it gave me that bothersome feeling as when something is missing.  On the third week, I finally asked one of the other men why their friend was not singing. He replied, “His wife passed away just before Easter and now he does not have a song to sing.”  I remember feeling quite sad for the silent, old man, and at the tender age of ten, what did I know about life after death.  I knew that Jesus rose from the dead, but did that mean that we still had a song to sing?

As we celebrate this Easter day, I suppose that we are all seeking a song to sing.  Like the women who came to the tomb, like the Apostles who were in hiding, they has lost their friend, their teacher, the one they were following and then He was dead and in the grave, and perhaps they lost their song too. The stone that sealed the tomb is rolled away, and they were still perplexed and puzzled about it all. “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” they are asked.  Yes, why do we?  Why do we keep searching for life, love, and happiness in an empty tomb? I suppose it is revealed in our faith, because much like the myrrh-bearing women who were the first to announce the empty tomb; we too come to celebrate an empty grave, because it means that we still have a song of joy to sing.  The resurrection of Christ is our certainty that there is indeed life after death, and that those loved ones who passed before us have Eternal life because of what Easter means for us today.  I once read that carved into a wooden wall of a cemetery during World War II, were these words, “I believe in the sun even when it is not shining; I believe in love even when I do not feel it; I believe in God even when he is silent.”  Even though the women do not see Jesus and all they have is a word from two men in dazzling clothes, angels who have appeared to them and say that Jesus is not here in the cemetery but is risen from the dead, that is what we have as well. We have a word of resurrection, a promise that challenges us to believe when God seems silent. What we have is a new song of joy that continues to be sung and celebrated every Easter for over two thousand years.

You may remember the violent earthquake that struck Haiti in January of 2010, and perhaps even the 70 year old woman that was mentioned on the news, found alive one week after the devastating destruction.  She was buried for 7 days by the earthquake and when they pulled her injured body from the rock and rubble that covered her those days, this elderly woman began singing. The night of the earthquake there were people who amazed others as they gathered outside to sing hymns and praise God in the midst of this tragedy. Why and how could they do this – you might ask?  It is only through a promise of God that death is not the last word for us; that through faith in Jesus Christ, resurrection to new life is not an idle tale.  We do not need to be consumed by death, but life in Christ is what gives us a new song to sing. We do not need to be stuck in wanting to return to the way things used to be, but we follow Christ to live into our present and our future.  My Ukrainian grandfather died on Friday, June 1, 1990.  He was 79 years old and sang in the church every Sunday for as long as I can remember, even though he lost my grandmother back in 1965, and not a day went by that he did not think of her.  But he also did not live those years in sadness, because God had put a new song in his heart. He believed in the words of the women at the tomb - that Jesus is indeed risen from the dead!  And that song gave him joy because he believed.  While I know it has been over two decades since I have visited my old neighborhood playground, not an Easter goes by in which I fail to hope that the elderly man I so tenderly remember found a new song to sing, because while death is real, it is by no means the final word. In Christ we sing of life, and this gives us hope to live with our grief over the loss of loved ones, and sadness over the other losses that we have endured in our lives. Jesus Christ is alive! He is our new song and through the power of the Holy Spirit, we keep on singing that new song in the face of death, wherever we find it.  Because we dare to believe that in the midst of death and destruction; that in the face of fear, Christ gives us a renewed song of joy.

On this Easter Day, we rejoice because the tomb is empty.  And along with Peter, I pray that we hear the good news today of our Lord’s Resurrection and that we run to the tomb to look inside and believe that the song we are hearing is true: ‘Christ is risen from the dead, by death He conquered death, and to those in the graves He granted life’. Alleluia!  May this Easter song of joy reach out to all of us on this glorious day, when the Church proclaims that the Lord is truly risen.  This cry, which burst forth from the hearts of the disciples on the first day after the Sabbath, has spanned the centuries and now, at this precise moment in time, renews once more humanity's hopes with the unaltered certainty of the Resurrection of Christ, the Redeemer of mankind.  “I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).  Just as Christ rose, so too shall we rise one day into a new and glorious Eternal life.  Christ assured us of this when he said: “The hour is coming in which all who are in their graves shall hear the voice of the Son of God. And they who have done good shall come forth unto resurrection of life. For this is the will of the Father who sent me, that whoever beholds the Son and believes in Him, shall have everlasting life, and I will raise Him up on the last day” (John 5:28-29, 6:40).  The Easter salutation ‘Christ is Risen’ or ‘Xrystos Voskres,’ first spoken by the Angel to the women at the Lord’s tomb, this joyful greeting has already for hundreds of years, echoed among our Ukrainian people throughout the entire Paschal season.  And by this salutation, we express the joyful song of Easter.  There is power in the presence of our risen Savior.  And it is my prayer, that each of you listening today will experience the peace and joy of our Lord’s Resurrection.  Like the Angels that first announced the empty tomb and spread the good news of Christ’s Resurrection, we too must go out and share the joy of our Resurrected Lord with those that we love, and with those who are in need of our love.  Praise be to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and to His glorious Resurrection.
