Дорогі в Радіо Слухачі!

 Минулої неділі розважали ми про Слугу Божого Митрополита Андрея, який 44 роки очолював нашу Церкву в період двох Світових воєн. Першого Листопада, була 66-а річниця від відходу у вічність.

На початку ХХ-го століття на митрополита Андрея були звернені погляди українців та поляків. Незважаючи на національність і віроісповідання, всіх хвилювало старозавітне питання: “Чи ти є наш, чи з ворогів наших”. Одні і другі потребували його, одні і другі хвалили його, одні і другі мали жаль до нього. Одні і другі бажали, щоб митрополит став по одному боці, забувши про інших. Коли вступив на митрополичий Пристіл, митрополит Андрей висловив побоювання, що його не зрозуміють. Одні будуть вважали його зрадником, бо він залешив римокатолицьку церкву і вернувся до своєї, Грекокатолицької, а другі будуть мати недовіря до нього бо він був у римокатолицькі церкві і будуть вважати, що він буде старатися златинізувати нашу церкву. Мало хто із сучасників 34-літнього Архиєпископа міг збагнути його місію у Вселенській Церкві, Його покликання до служіння святій справі – єднанню православних і католиків у єдиній Церкві Христовій.

Пів - століття на митрополичому престолі... Дві світові війни... Чотири зміни урядів... У важких умовах воєнних та міжвоєнних лихоліть митрополит Андрея провадив Свою Церкву, підтримував наукою Христа, вченням Церкви, своїм особистим прикладом ЇЇ вірних.

У праці “Der Christliche Osten”(Християнський Схід) митрополит Андрей, говорячи про важливість і довговічність ідей знатних людей, наголошував: “Дуже часто такі ідеї і думки приносять свої плоди далеко після смерті їх автора чи носія”. Так сталося із самим митрополитом. Все, що він старався розбудувати, організувати, здавалося – загинуло, пропало в хуртовині воєн та переслідувань. Але його світлі, далекосяглі ідеї збереглися і здійснюються знову, десятки років після його смерті.

1923 року Слуга Божий Митрополит Андрей Шептицький опенився у вічному місті Римі, Італія. Цікаво завважити що „будучи в Римі Митрополит Андрей висуває перед Святішим Пристолом план широмасштабної реорганізації Греко-Католицької Церкви, включно зі зміною її назви ма „Українська-Католицька Церква”, створенням українського патріярхату і впровадженням сучасної української мови в церковну службу.” (Цитата Михайла Марунчака з „Митр. Андрей Шептиць­кий на Заході, 1929-23 у дисертації о. Івана Кащака, „Митр. Андрей Шептицький і постання Укр. Кат. Ц. в США.”) Перебуваючи в Римі, і знаюучи про велеку небезпеку повороу до Галичини, Митрополит Андрей написав Заповіт і передав його на руки Святішого Отця Папи ПІЯ XI. В ньому так написано:

Рим, липень 1923

В мирі!

Святіший Отче!

Я виїжджаю з Риму, будучи попереджений, що по моєму повороті до Львова я буду убитий. Я приймаю цю смерть як допуст Божої волі. І я радо віддаю своє життя Господеві за з'єдинення Церков та щоб випросити в Бога Христовий мир між католиками наших країн - на жаль, розділених несправедливостями та віковою ненавистю.

Приготовляючись на смерть, я хочу заявити перед Богом, Який бачить моє сумління, та перед Вашою Святістю - намісником Ісуса Христа, що жодний людський згляд ніколи не привів мене до будь-якого прилюдного вчинку єпископського мого уряду. Від тієї пори, коли з послуху Вселенському Архиєреєві, прийняв я важкий єпископський уряд, зрозумів я, що моїм обов'язком є провадити своїх вірних до вічного спасіння почерез віру католицьку, у любові до Бога та до Його Церкви, - то значить, християнізувати життя, думки, і теж, навіть, патріотизм моїх вірних.

Всяку політику я все лишав іншим, будучи переконаним, що було б це зрадою Ісуса Христа, коли б поклав я між мною й будь-ким з моїх вірних причини для непорозумінь задля дочасних справ, та які не мають відношення до духовного добра моїх вірних. Сповняючи обов'язки любови до ближнього, приставав я з моїми вірними у справедливих їхніх національних аспіраціях, роблячи себе всім для всіх, щоб їх спасти; обороняв я їх також перед несправедливостями.

По довгому іспиті сумління, не бачу я, що міг би я був змінити в своєму розумінні моїх обов'язків пастиря. Ніколи не було в мене ненависти до тих, які мене ненавиділи. Не було в мене ніколи злоби супроти тих, які кривдили моїх вірних і мене самого. Я їм все прощав, і прощаю я їм щиросердно. Ніколи не апробував я ненависти чи національного шовінізму. Проповідував я все тільки любов до ближнього, любов до всіх, навіть до ворогів. Євангелія Ісуса Христа була одинокою темою мого проповідування. Одинока ж ціль моєї праці - вічне спасіння моїх вірних.

Отож, вмираю я як жертва моїх завдань і обов'язків в надії, що Бог прийме жертву моєї смерти. Ціле своє життя просив я у Бога ласки вмерти як свідок віри католицької. Волів би я вмерти з рук ворогів віри цієї, але я приймаю смерть так, як Господь мені її дає, і я наперед прощаю тим, котрі мені її завдадуть.

Все був я вірний Апостольській Римській Столиці, і намагався я все утверджувати моїх братів у цій вірності. Сердечно жалую за всі свої гріхи, якими я образив Божу доброту. Жалую з причини справедливого Божого суду та із любови до безконечної доброти, мудрости, всемогутності та маєстату Божого. І покірно благаю Бога, щоб милосердився Він над моєю бідною душею, яку я віддаю в Його руки через заступництво Пресвятої і Пренепорочної Богоматері й Приснодіви Марії, через заступництво св. Йосифа Її Обручника та св. Йосафата Мученика. Вірую в усі правди віри католицької і очікую воскресіння мертвих. Амінь.

На кінці перечитаймо молитву за прославу Слуги Божого митрополита Андрея.

Господи Ісусе Христе – Ти завжди нагороджуєш Твоїх вірних слуг не тіль­ки особливішими дарами Своєї любо­ви, але й віч­ною нагородою свя­тих у небі, а в многих випадках і про­славою на Твоїх святих престолах, тут на землі.

   Покірно благаємо Тебе: зволь так про­славити Твого вір­ного слугу Митро­полита Андрея. Він упро­довж свого пра­ведного життя, „повно­го терпінь і досвідів”, був доб­рим пас­ти­рем свого стада і великим под­виж­ни­ком церков­ної єдности. А через його прославу і за­ступництво пошли і ціло­му народові на­шому великий дар єд­ности і любо­ви. Амінь.

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

This month, our Ukrainian Catholic Church commemorates the 66^th anniversary of the passing of the Servant of God, Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky, into Eternal rest.  This year also marks the 52^nd Anniversary from the time in which our people initiated the process that would see him formally recognized by the Church as a Saint.  Throughout our Churches we continue to remember him in a prayer for his beatification, but does each of us truly know all that Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky accomplished in his lifetime, which leads us to pray for him to be remembered as one among the saints?  Today, I would like to share with you a part of his legacy.  Metropolitan Andrew was born on July 29, 1865, in Ukraine, baptized with the name Roman, and raised by a family of noble lineage, but his upbringing instilled in him a deep sense of faith.  In 1888, as Ukrainian Christians were celebrating 900 years of Christianity, he entered a Monastery of the Order of Saint Basil the Great and took the name of the Apostle Andrew.  He was ordained a priest in 1892.  His academic brilliance, leadership qualities, personal dedication and sanctity soon saw him chosen as a Bishop in 1899. Events soon developed where the Metropolitan See of Ukraine needed to be filled. The young energetic Bishop Andrew was the natural choice. He became the Metropolitan-Archbishop in 1900, effectively, becoming head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church - at the age of 35.

Nearly seven feet tall, Metropolitan Andrew was a giant not only in his outward appearance but also among the outstanding figures of his time.  He was recognized as a giant of intellect, heart, human understanding, and Christian love.  In addition, Metropolitan Andrew was one of the greatest ecumenists of the Catholic Church in the first part of the 20^th century.  The Ukrainian people, Catholic and Orthodox alike, loved and respected him as their venerable father.  A great benefactor of national culture at a time when our nation was deprived of its statehood, Metropolitan Andrew founded museums, organized libraries, supported schools, initiated the printing of various periodicals, and established the Theological Academy of Lviv.  Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky conscientiously undertook his responsibilities as the head of the Church and the Spiritual leader of our people. He worked tirelessly at what he saw as the tasks of paramount importance: the deepening of the faith of his people; the revitalization of the Eastern-Byzantine Rite which was proper to his Church; and the development of cultural and social awareness among his people.  The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church was fast developing and spreading. As "head and father" of this church he insisted on taking carBrazil, Argentina, and twice to North America. Canada and the United Statese of the spiritual needs of his people. Metropolitan Andrew traveled to now have Metropolitan Provinces. This is due in no small part to the intervention and support of Metropolitan Andrew at a critical moment in Church History.

In his dedication to God and his people, Metropolitan Andrew knew that the work would be difficult and challenging. Having truly dedicating his life to the Will of God, he was able to welcome any challenge, and with such pureness of heart, he was able to lead our people with boldness. Metropolitan Andrew’s position and attitude were at first questioned even by some of his own.  However, his clear vision of what must be done in order for our Church to survive, kept him forging ahead. He never hesitated to come to the defense of truth and justice. Aside from dramatic confrontations with Nazis and Communists during their respective occupations, he was first imprisoned by Moscow just prior to the tragic revolution, from 1914-1917. He even declared his willingness to the Apostolic See to give his life in "martyrdom for the Faith and Church unity in exchange for the suffering of his people" and even requested permission for this should the occasion arise. During the Second World War he remained with his people and openly protested the Nazi mistreatment of Ukrainian and Jews. Metropolitan Andrew saved the lives of many Jewish people of western Ukraine who were under Nazi occupation. The Metropolitan would secretly give them shelter in Lviv's, St. George's Cathedral. The Metropolitan, who stood resolutely in favor of Ukraine's independence and shared in the general euphoria of liberation from the Soviets, nevertheless kept a critical vigilance toward German rule. In February 1942, he even dared to lodge a protest against the destruction of western Ukraine’s Jewish community. The Nazis told the Metropolitan that if it were not for his age, he would have been shot for meddling in matters which should not concern him. The Metropolitan saw things differently. He persisted with works of Christian charity. He soon mobilized a Christian opposition to Nazi rule in western Ukraine. He also encouraged Christian resistance. Working with his own brother, Klymentii, leader of Lviv's Studite monks, the Metropolitan gathered together a small army of nuns and priests who would risk their own lives in clandestine rescue and sanctuary operations. False baptismal certificates were arranged for more than 200 Jewish children, who were then smuggled to monasteries, orphanages, and convent schools in and around Lviv. All these children's lives were saved; fifteen in the Metropolitan's own residence, at a time when sheltering Jews was a criminal offense punishable by death.

Throughout his life Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky was a friend to Ukrainian youth. Like a father, he was concerned with all Ukrainian children. He taught them how to live and work to achieve God’s blessings for themselves and their native land, and whenever the need arose, he extended his kindly hands to help the young people find their way.  Every Ukrainian child dreamed that just once in their life they would be able to look upon the beloved Metropolitan, the great son of Ukraine, to just once touch his priestly garb, to hear just one word from his fatherly lips, and to receive a blessing from his kindly hands.  Metropolitan Sheptytsky saw the need for strong leaders, which is why he became a dedicated supporter of the Ukrainian youth organization, PLAST, whose development of good leadership skills is one of its main goals.  Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky was an excellent role model for youth because he led by his example - cultivating leadership skills in all aspects of life, faith, family, community, and country. Through his actions it is clear that good leadership is not limited to one area or interest, but is interwoven in all aspects of life. He told the youth of Ukraine: “Remember that God gave you the great blessing of belonging to the Holy Universal Catholic Church. Love Her and be faithful to Her. Strive on your own to learn the catechism so that you will not forget your daily prayers and your obligation to receive Holy Communion, and never hesitate to guide others along the true path of our faith”.

One of the threads we find sewn throughout all Metropolitan Andrew’s endeavors is that of Church unity.  Some of his hopes were not realized in his lifetime. Somehow Divine Providence works in such a manner.  Moses never entered the Promised Land, and the great Christian "movement" at one point seemed hopeless with its founder left dying on a cross and only his mother and one young Apostle standing below.  And so it was with Metropolitan Andrew.  However, much of his work is now being fully appreciated and developed.  In fact, it would not be an exaggeration to say that most of the various endeavors now in motion in the Ukrainian Catholic Church were either directly or indirectly initiated or reanimated by the efforts of Metropolitan Andrew.  He died on November 1, 1944 at the age of 80, after serving our Church for 56 years. His body lies in a crypt beneath St. George's Cathedral in Lviv. The process that would see him formally recognized by the Church as a Saint was officially initiated December 5, 1958.  This year marks the 52^nd anniversary, as we still eagerly await his beatification.

"Pray that our Lord and his blessed Mother protect our unfortunateUkrainian nation, which has endured so much in difficult times. May you be strong and courageous in your faith, and persevere in dedicated service to God our Lord!  My voice will now be silent - until the Last Judgment."  These were the final words of Metropolitan Andrew Sheptytsky.  And today, we remember his legacy; we remember all that he accomplished for our Church at a time when we needed him the most. And we continue to pray for his beatification: “Our Lord, Jesus Christ - You always regard Your faithful servants, not only with special gifts of Your love, but also with the Eternal reward of the saints in heaven, and in many cases You grant them the recognition of sanctity by Your Church here on earth. We humbly pray: grant that your faithful servant Metropolitan Andrew be numbered among the saints. Throughout his just life, “full of suffering and trials,” he was a good shepherd for his flock and a great labourer for Christian unity. And through his beatification and intercession, grant our entire people the great gift of unity and love. O Lord, in your mercy grant us the favour that we ask for through the intercession of your Servant, Andrew Sheptytsky.”
